The Willows Project

- providing horticultural and nature-based activities on a working organic farm -

About The Project

The Willows Project provides horticultural and nature-based activities at Canalaside Community Foods, a working organic farm a few miles from Leamington Spa.  We work with a range of excluded groups and individuals, including people with mental health problems, learning disabilities, long term illnesses and disaffected young people.  Through practical and creative activity sessions we help people to develop new skills, build confidence and connect with nature.

Background Information

The Willows Project is based at Canalside Community Foods, in Radford Semele, Leamington Spa.

Canalside provides fresh, organic, seasonal and locally grown fruit and veg and involves local people in the process of producing the food they eat.

It was a desire to share the space and opportunities at the farm with more people, especially excluded individuals and groups, that brought together a team of people to develop The Willows Project as a separate social enterprise which integrates its work with the existing agriculture on the farm.

The Willows Project is located in a peaceful corner of the community farm where we have an all weather cabin, vegetable and flower garden with raised beds and a fire pit. Check out our gallery to see what our space is like!

Referrals / How It Works

The Willows Project seeks to provide services for clients who self-refer as part of a direct payments scheme, or are referred by family members or assessors.

We can also be commissioned by referral agencies such as social services, health care trusts, community mental health teams, education authorities and probation services.

Please contact us to find out more and to arrange a visit to the farm so we can discuss your requirements.

What We Offer

At The Willows we provide a range of nature and farm based activity sessions. These can be full or half days, short courses or regular weekly groups. We adapt to the specific needs of different individuals or user groups so please get in touch to discuss how we could work with you, your family member, your clients or service users.

Our sessions offer the chance to learn new skills, get involved on the organic farming, get creative or simply get outdoors and relax in nature. Again, we are very adaptable and have the benefit of our small peaceful site complete with cabin, garden, growing beds and fire pit and also are situated on a larger community farm growing organic fruit and vegetables on a wider scale.

Activities

Our sessions include the following activities:

  • Guided farm walks – a chance to explore the farm, see what’s growing and learn about organic farming techniques

  • Horticulture and food growing – including seed sowing, preparing the ground, planting out, weeding, care of the soil, harvesting

  • Willow and woodworking skills

  • Basic bushcraft and fireside skills

  • Seasonal nature-based art and craft activities

We also run and are growing our small enterprise model. This involves cultivating flowers, herbs and other crops and making seasonal crafts to sell at the local farm or other local markets and events, with profits re-invested into the project. Involvement with the enterprise will enable clients to gain practical work experience, make a meaningful contribution to the project and to develop a range of soft skills, confidence and self-esteem.
